Abstract
The long-distance bus industry, though always a small contributor to intercity travel, quickly learnt how to market its facilities and soon came to rely on advertising for promoting both regular and special features. The basic commodity which the emerging long-distance bus industry and its advertising agents had to sell was travel. The practical advantages offered by bus travel, economy is a consistent selling point. Regular clients who travelled for work or family reasons needed to be assures that they were taking the right decision. National bus companies spent the second highest amounts in major periodicals in order to tap the growing leisure market. Ironically the impact of all the time, money and effort spent on advertising is immeasurable. The growing impersonality of national markets in the USA, producers needed some means of informing consumers about which goods and services were available.
