Abstract
In this investigation , students are presented with two pictures of the same pocket watch showing two different times. In each picture, the pocket watch has only an hour hand displaying the time. The first picture of the pocket watch represents the time that someone fell asleep; the second picture represents the time when that person woke up (see the activity sheet in the sidebar to the right). Students are asked to determine what time the person fell asleep, what time the person woke up, and how long the person slept. Susan Crocker, a grade 4 teacher at Our Lady of Peace Elementary/Junior High School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, decided to expand the investigation to a longer, three-day inquiry with her students. She felt that additional time would give the students and her more opportunities to engage with the problem and to make real-world connections.
