Abstract
The Neolithic, the prehistoric period of the initial domestication of plants and animals, occurred independently in many parts of the world. The transition to agriculture had a profound impact on human social organization, demography, health and disease, and behavior. As a process through which human populations dramatically changed the local environment, the Neolithic also changed the human adaptive landscape and became a primary driver of evolutionary change within our species.
