Abstract
City(civitas)‐based definitions of the urban that emphasize uniqueness and urban(urbs)‐based definitions of the city that highlight similarity between cities are used interchangeably in social theory. A variety of schools or individual scholars who write from the point of view of various cultures (German, French, Indian, Asian, African, South American) or cities (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin), as well as multiple disciplines and fields of study (geography, sociology, anthropology, urban planning, political science, cultural studies) have contributed to this fusion of meanings that define the city. Both sets of terms focus definitions on size, periodization and explaining conflicts that arise from planning and macro‐transitions between traditional, modern, and global forms of urbanization. This can be seen across classical sociological theory, recent globalization theory, the contemporary Los Angeles School of critical geography, older Chicago and New York based urban studies, as well as research on the explosion of informal or squatter cities and the implications for the future of the city.
