Abstract The political economy of communication (PEC) takes the media, Internet, and telecommunications industries—for example the structure of their markets, technologies, rules, laws and polices, patterns of use—as objects of analysis. PEC examines the communication and media industries as a cluster of associated technologies set within an institutional context of business arrangements, policies, laws and regulations, established technologies, and arrangements from the past—as well as capital, wealth, power, and the habits of everyday life.
