Abstract
À partir d’une étude de cas portant sur une aluminerie québécoise moderne, l’auteur s’interroge sur la coexistence paradoxale qu’il observe entre une forte autorégulation des salariés (qui prennent sur eux les contraintes d’efficacité et de production) et le maintien d’une certaine distance entre les personnels d’exécution et d’encadrement (les premiers s’opposent aux seconds en affirmant leur solidarité et leur conscience syndicale). Pour l’auteur, les approches en termes de fusion identitaire ou, au contraire, les analyses en termes de domination sociale, sont impuissantes à rendre compte de l’engagement des salariés en dépit d’une division sociale toujours présente. Pour comprendre un tel phénomène, il propose une autre piste, fondée sur l’analyse de la relation d’emploi et des trois principes d’« équité », d’« efficacité » et d’« indépendance » qui, selon lui, sous-tendent cette relation.
