Abstract
Die Zuwanderung und die Problematik der Integration von Ausländerinnen und Ausländern in die europäischen Nationalgesellschaften werfen seit einigen Jahrzehnten emotionsgeladene Kontroversen über die gesellschaftlichen Kohäsionsmerkmale auf: Sind Europas Nationalstaaten ‚Einwanderungsgesellschaften' und sollen sie welche sein; wie viel kulturelle Eigenheit darf den Eingewanderten gewährt, wie viel Assimilation muss ihnen abverlangt werden; welche Angebote an politischer Teilhabe sollen die Zugewanderten erhalten?In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland führt der Streit um die Integration zu besonders konfrontativen Auseinandersetzungen, weil eine mittlerweile fünfzig Jahre währende, intensive Zuwanderung als Bedrohung einer vermeintlichen nationalen Geschlossenheit empfunden wird.Die daraus resultierende Abwehr wird noch verschärft, weil mit der Zuwanderung von Muslimen der bislang unangefochtene kulturelle Einfluss und die Wertigkeit des christlichen Glaubensbekenntnisses für die gesellschaftliche und politische Geschlossenheit der Staatsnation erschüttert werden.Das im Zuge der Zuwanderung in die öffentliche Debatte eingeflossene Reizwort der ‚Multikulturalität' liefert dabei, in völlig gegensätzlichen Interpretationen, entweder den Ausdruck für die Angst vor der Andersartig-
