Abstract
Abstract This chapter outlines the growing fears caused by Dalhousie’s annexation policy, as well as the growing alarm throughout the country aroused by suspected British threats to religious and other traditions. Although the new Governor-General, Lord Canning , is a less intractable character than his predecessor, he arrives too late to stem the unrest in the states or in the sepoy regiments. Nana Sahib is seen to be taking advantage of the situation and gathering supporters. Sir Robert, although aware that this is not the best time to be absent, goes on leave for the sake of his health. His stand-in, Colonel Durand, is shown to be a very different character from Sir Robert, more of a ‘hard liner’ and far less sympathetic in his dealings with Holkar.
