Abstract
Born on 25 January 1950 in New York City, Gloria Naylor is the eldest child of Alberta McAlpin Naylor and Roosevelt Naylor. The family lived in several places in New York as Naylor grew up, including the apartment building in Harlem owned by her grandmother Luecelia McAlpin. In addition to several physical transitions, a religious transition would soon have a strong impact on Gloria Naylor. Naylor's mother joined the Jehovah's Witnesses during the years 1963–1964, and Naylor was baptized a Jehovah's Witness and minister when she graduated from high school in 1968. This baptism eventually led her to North Carolina and Florida, where she preached full-time. In 1975, however, she left the Jehovah's Witnesses. After studying nursing at Medgar Evers College, she transferred to Brooklyn College to major in English.
