Abstract
Subject Canada-China trade talks. Significance As US President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ line on trade policy threatens the future of NAFTA, Canada’s Liberal government is aiming to negotiate a comprehensive free trade agreement with Beijing to increase access to the Chinese market for Canadian natural resources, goods and services. However, Ottawa faces strong public opposition to Canada enhancing economic engagement with China. Impacts Washington is likely to object to greater leeway for Chinese investment in Canada. Ottawa is unlikely to deliver on an extradition treaty with China, a locus for human rights concerns. Chinese purchases of softwood lumber could diversify Canada away from the US market.
