MEDALLION (LABEL)

An American record, trademarked in 1919 by the Baldwin Piano Co. of Cincinnati. Emerson masters were used for the issues, which were nearly all dance numbers. Some vocal pieces were released, such as “When You’re Gone I Won’t Forget” by the Shannon Four (#8245), and some sacred items. Emerson artists often used pseudonyms on Medallion. There were no issues after 1921. [Hinze 1977; Rust 1978.] American comedian and singer, also animal imitator and announcer; born in Orange, New Jersey. He made cylinders for Edison from March 1906, beginning with “What’s the Use of Knocking When a Man Is Down” (#9234); and made many coon songs and Irish dialect records. He was with Edison for 32 years. Meeker was the announcer for hundreds of records up to 1908, when announcements were dropped. His final Edison recordings were Diamond Discs “Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Shean” with Steve Porter (#50970; 1922) and “He’s Living the Life of Reilly” (#51040; 1923). He also imitated animals and did background bits in assistance of other artists. Meeker died in Newark, New Jersey. He studied violin and piano; went to Vienna and played double bass as well. Then he took up conducting,and when he graduated from the Vienna Academy of Music in 1957 he made his debut directing the Tonkkünstler Orchestra in the Musikverein. In 1960 he became director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, then conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra concurrently, and was named director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977. In 1978 he became music director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1991. In 1995 he was named music director of the Bavarian State Opera, although he did not take this position until three years later. Mehta’s discs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic were rather numerous; they covered 20th-century composers like Ives and Varèse as well as the standard repertoire. With the New York Philharmonic for CBS Records he recorded Symphonie fantastique plus the Beethoven and Brahms symphonies. Mehta has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera, and recorded complete versions of Turandot, Tosca, Aida, and Trovatore.
