Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Abstract Postcolonial scholarship has tended to discuss settlement by referring to European colonization beginning in the early modern period and by differentiating “settler colonies” (like Australia and Canada) from “occupation colonies” (like Nigeria and India). Equally often, though, only the settler colony is defined and named, thus constructing its opposite (the occupation colony) as the unmarked colonial norm. The most basic distinction between the two is that, after the formal end of colonization, in settler colonies the colonizing population remained, whereas in the occupation colony most of the colonizing population returned home. One can best understand settler colonies by highlighting their distinctions from occupation colonies, though these differences between the two have been and continue to be debated.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
