Abstract
This chapter describes the acquired disorders of the episclera and sclera. The sclera is of neural crest origin and forms the posterior three quarters of the outer fibrous tunic of the eye; at the lim-bus it transforms into the corneal stroma, which forms the anterior quarter of the fibrous tunic. The external surface of the sclera is covered by a thin vascularized layer of collagen and fibroblasts termed the episclera. Limbal melanocytomas arise from the melanocytes that demarcate the limbus at the junction of the corneal stroma and sclera. Episcleritis is considered to be exclusively a disease of dogs. Scleritis and necrotizing scleritis are rare conditions that have only been reported in dogs. Non-necrotizing scleritis is predominantly a disorder of dogs, is much less frequent than episcleritis, and is almost always accompanied by uveitis which may be quite mild early in the course of the clinical disease.
