Abstract
Subject China's services sector. Significance Preliminary economic data for the first quarter of 2016 show that a buoyant service sector helped minimise the negative impact on GDP growth resulting from China's industrial slowdown, with services growing 7.6% compared with overall GDP growth of 6.9%. A key question is to what extent services will be able to maintain this supportive role, given the many challenges that face their continued expansion. Impacts The importance of exports as a driver of economic growth will recede with the shift from manufacturing to services. Import demand growth will weaken, as services require less energy, fewer raw materials and fewer intermediate goods than industry. The combined import and export effect will dampen China's impact on the world economy and dampen global commodity demand. Buoyant service sector growth will, however, encourage greater foreign direct investment in services.
