In order to evaluate the matrix elements of the Zeeman Hamiltonian sandwiched between molecular states, it is desirable to rewrite the Zeeman operator in terms of operators that act on states in the molecule-fixed frame. At high magnetic fields, the Zeeman shifts of all rotational states are linear. At high fields, the electron spin becomes decoupled from the rotational motion of the molecule. In general, a moving electron possesses an orbital as well as the spin angular momentum. It is preferable to use Hund's case basis for the evaluation of the Zeeman shifts of the rotational energy levels. In general, the Zeeman energy levels of a 2Σ molecule are perturbed by couplings to other electronic states, specifically, 2Π states. At intermediate fields, some of the rotational states exhibit nonlinear Zeeman effect.
