Abstract
Novelist, poet, and activist Joy Kogawa was one of the first visible minority writers whose work joined the Canadian literary canon. As a Japanese Canadian woman she is often seen to be writing from the ethno‐cultural margins, despite the enormous popular and critical success of her first novel, Obasan (1981). Thematically, Kogawa's writing concentrates on the struggles of characters located on the cultural peripheries, including ethnic others, women, activists, the homeless, and the mentally ill.
