Abstract
Our earliest experience of the world, even before we have been born, is a sound-based one. The prime source of sound for a baby is its mother's voice. Music and language sound similar early on because babies hear the tune of the voice. Research done by a team led by Sandra Trehub, a psychologist at Toronto University, has shown that even new-born babies clearly respond to particular voices, and the tune and rhythm of spoken words with which they become familiar, suggesting that musical significance comes before verbal significance.
