Jean-Jacques Rousseau est né à Genève en 1712. Trois siècles plus tard, on a beaucoup commémoré sa naissance, par des célébrations, des publications et des événements scientifiques. Dès lors, la tentation pourrait être grande de penser que tout a déjà été dit sur l’un des contributeurs à l’Encyclopédie, sur l’auteur d’un immense succès littéraire du XVIIIe siècle (Julie ou la nouvelle Héloïse), sur le philosophe dont on affirme souvent qu’il a jeté les bases de la démocratie et des droits de l’homme. Ce n’est pas du tout le cas. Comment renouveler et actualiser la perspective ? Cela passe par la géographie (Rousseau au Québec), par le cadre théorique (les disability studies), par les genres abordés (la triangularité épistolaire et cinématographique, le théâtre et sa conceptualisation au XXe siècle, la fiction romanesque), par les sujets (le végétarisme, l’hygiène, la fatalité) — mais aussi par le mélange de chercheurs chevronnés et de jeunes chercheurs, de chercheurs nord-américains et de chercheurs européens.
