Abstract
William Ormond Mitchell was Canada's best‐loved literary humorist in the second half of the twentieth century. He brought to Canadian letters a passionately Western Canadian sensibility and an infectious verve and irreverence that animated his fiction, drama, and radio plays (particularly the long‐running and popular CBC Radio series, Jake and the Kid , 1950–6, reincarnated on television and in book form). By bridging popular and high culture, he became a populist literary icon. His best‐known novel, Who Has Seen the Wind (1947), set in Crocus, a fictionalized Weyburn, Saskatchewan, recreates the traditional story of initiation on the prairies, while his many decades of performing and readings across the country and abroad established Mitchell's distinctive voice and presence as uniquely Western Canadian. Mitchell also enjoyed a fabled career as a teacher of creative writing, particularly at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, where he directed the program for writers from 1975 to 1986, perfecting his “free fall” technique, encouraging his students to dream directly onto the page.
