Abstract
Chapter one first provides motivation to the reader explaining the necessity of radio-over-fiber technology and how it will play a vital role in upcoming truly high speed, reliable and flexible wireless networks. This chapter also explains how radio-over-fiber is essential to support mm wave systems. It introduces functional modules of a basic radio-over-fiber architecture and clarifies the difference between baseband-RF and RF-optical modulation that are often confused. This chapter also outlines some other fiber-feeder approaches such as digitized radio over fiber approach and the transmission of intermediate frequency over fiber.
