Abstract
Social capital has extensive roots in anthropology and sociology, but the term itself came into wide usage in the 1980s. It is associated primarily with the work of Pierre Bourdieu, James S. Coleman, and Robert Putnam, whose conceptualizations of social capital varied substantially. The formulation by Putnam, which sees social capital as a property of collectivities as well as individuals (or as embedded in the relationships between individuals) has been particularly successful in applied and policy work because of its greater ease of operationalization and measurement.
