Abstract
Michael John Eden had a worldwide reputation for his work on tropical ecology, and the agricultural systems and land management problems of rainforest and savanna.This work was very properly recognized by the Society in 1994 when he was the recipient of the Back Award.Mike Eden was the son of a Methodist Minister, and educated at Kingswood School, Bath.After National Service in the Royal Air Force, he went up to Christ Church College, Oxford in 1959 to read Geography.While at Oxford he took part in two of the University's expeditions to North Africa, perhaps the starting point for a lifelong interest in travel.He was briefly attached as a soil surveyor to the Water and Power Development Authority in West Pakistan, at a time when the traditions of the Raj had not altogether faded, and he would recall that as a sahib, albeit youthful, he was not allowed to wade across even the shallowest stream, but was carried across by the bearers
