Abstract
Current Opinion in Anesthesiology was launched in 1988. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of anesthesiology is divided into 16 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Claude MeistelmanClaude MeistelmanDr Claude Meistelman attended medical school at Paris 13 University, France. He completed his residency at Hopitaux de Paris, Assitance Publique, France. Then Dr Meistelman became Assistant Professor at Hopital Saint Vincet de Paul, Cochin University in Paris, France where he specialised in pediatric anesthesia. In 1988, he became staff anesthesiologist at Institut Gustave Roussy, Villejuif, France, the biggest cancer center in Europe. Dr Meistelman joined the faculty at University of California San Francisco, USA in 1991, as visiting Assistant Professor in Ron Miller's department of Anesthesiology. In 1994 he became Professor of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Nancy University, France, where he is now. He is currently Professor and Chairman of the department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Brabois University Hospital, Université de Nancy Lorraine, France. Dr Meistelman has maintained a general and pediatric practice since his first years in Nancy. He has been particularly involved in the development of news techniques such as Target Controlled Infusion (TCI) and new muscle relaxants and monitoring of neuromuscular transmission. His commitment and enthusiasm also encompass many facets of medical education along the continuum, from training and mentoring future physicians to fostering lifelong learning and continuous professional development Dr Meistelman has served twice as the French representative at the board of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) He is the former Chairman of the ESA pharmacology subcommittee. After being involved in the ESA research committee for 5 years, he is now in charge of the ESA mentorship program. The main goal of this ESA program is the promotion of young researchers through one to one mentoring by experienced and well recognized researchers. Dr Meistelman also served as Chair of the nurse anesthetists committee of the French Society of Anaesthesia (SFAR) and is former Vice Editor in Chief of Annales Françaises d’Anesthésie et de Réanimation. Dr Meistelman is a reviewer for scientific articles in several journals including Anesthesiology, Anesthesia Analgesia, British journal of Anaesthesia and European Journal of Anaesthesiology. Dr Meistelman has given more than 200 invited lectures worldwide on various topics including neuromuscular blocking agents and pharmacology in pediatrics. He has published 110 peer-reviewed articles and has authored 26 chapters in textbooks. He has also authored the pharmacology of neuromuscular blocking drugs chapter of Miller's Anesthesia (eighth and ninth edition). Stephan A. LoerStephan A. LoerDr Stephan A. Loer, M.D., Ph.D., is a full Professor of Anesthesiology and the Chair of the Anesthetic Department at Amsterdam University Medical Centers, location VUmc, the Netherlands. He is the head of the Department of Anesthesiology at VUmc and serves as a member of the European Board of Anesthesiology, with special interest in patient safety issues. Dr. Loer earned his medical and Ph.D. degrees from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany. He started his anesthetic career as a senior house officer at the Royal Halifax Infirmary, UK, and completed his residency at the Hannover Medical School, Germany. Thereafter, he practiced Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the Department of Anesthesiology of the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf in Germany. His experimental and clinical research focuses on the pulmonary circulation and perioperative lung function. This year, he is the Section Editor for the Technology, Education and Safety section of the journal Current Opinion in Anesthesiology. Dr. Loer is convinced that the expertise of anesthesiologists should be utilized more frequently during the postoperative period to improve surgical outcomes.
