Abstract
Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic relapsing and remitting hepatitis, seen across all ages and in both genders. Disease severity ranges from mild asymptomatic inflammation to acute liver failure. The syndrome of autoimmune hepatitis lacks a definitive diagnostic test and disease is characterized broadly by transaminitis, hypergammaglobulinaemia and the presence of autoantibodies. Histology whilst not unique in its own right includes a plasma cell rich interface hepatitis. Exclusion of drug-induced liver injury and Wilson's disease is important. Therapy with prednisone and azathioprine is successful in the majority of cases in terms of inducing disease remission and preventing disease relapse. Some patients may have outlier features of other autoimmune liver diseases, including primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis. Overlap syndromes are, however, not distinct diseases.
