Abstract
Whole Foods Market (WFM) is the world's largest retailer specializing in natural and organic foods. WFM began with one store in Austin, Texas in 1980 and by 2014 had over 365 locations – mainly in the United States, but also Canada and the United Kingdom (WFM, 2014a). The chain was the country's first certified organic grocer and carries a wide range of USDA‐certified organic foods. WFM does not sell products containing harmful additives, artificial colors, preservatives, sweeteners, or hydrogenated fats (WFM, 2014b). A quality standards team maintains a list of chemicals that are banned from the store, and also bans meats produced using antibiotics, growth hormones, or under inhumane conditions (e.g., beak trimming broiler chickens) (WFM, 2014c).
