Abstract
This entry summarizes the extent and nature of technological developments in the Victorian period, and describes the advances in printing and paper technologies that led to the increase in periodical and illustrated literature which established a mass print culture. It links the symbolic role of the railway to the introduction of industrialized temporality that influenced much writing, including serialized fiction, and was associated with an increasingly commodified society. Realism is relevant to a range of technologies, including in the theater, and in tension with the paradoxical relationship between technology and the uncanny as well as the permeable boundaries between bodies and machines. The entry concludes by noting the extent to which Victorians’ ambivalence about technologies persists in our own disciplinary frameworks.
