Abstract
Jack Upland is a late medieval antifraternal treatise spoken in the voice of a rustic country peasant who condemns friars for their immoral behavior. It inspired literary responses in the form of Friar Daw's Reply and Upland's Rejoinder, but Jack Upland remained the most widely read. This is due in part to its inclusion in early modern printings of Chaucer's works and in part to the fact that of the three texts it is the only one that stands on its own.
