Abstract
James S ewid (1913–1988) was a Kwakiutl Indian living in Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada. He spent his childhood in poverty, with only a few years of schooling, on a remote rural reserve, dependent on fishing. In adolescence he rose to high social rank by inheriting his family “names.” With wife and children he moved from the Village Island Reserve to the Alert Bay Industrial Reserve in order to modernize the Indian community with the help of “progressive” Indians of all bands. He served many years as elected chief of the Reserve in Alert Bay, being reelected many times. Sewid was the first elected chief in Canada. As a successful entrepreneur, he owned a store, a sawmill, a seafood freezing plant, and a seine boat each at a different time in his life. Sewid spent his lifetime on the sea as commercial fisherman and ship owner. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
