Abstract
Lionel Pigot Johnson (1867–1902) was a poet and critic whose reputation as a “minor” author of the 1890s has been undergoing reconsideration in recent scholarship. During his short life, Johnson was a member of the Rhymers’ Club, a proponent of Irish Home Rule, a Roman Catholic convert, and an important decadent poet. He was known for being a scholar, a theologian, and a traditionalist, and his poetry often blends his interests in Celtic history, classicism, and medievalism with the contemporary concerns of late Victorian Britain and his personal struggles with alcoholism and a suppressed homosexuality. Although he published only one book of literary criticism and two volumes of poetry in his lifetime, many of his letters and essays were collected in the two decades following his death, and his writing had a significant influence on modernists like Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and W. B. Yeats.
