Panchromatic Phthalocyanine Sensitizer A π-conjugation side chain with an adsorption site was introduced at an α position of a zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) macrocycle. The compound (αPcS1) shows a red shifted Q band and a broad absorption band from 350 to 550 nm, which is assigned to the intramolecular charge-transfer transition from the ZnPc core to the side chains. TD-DFT calculations provide a clear interpretation of the effect of the thiophene conjugation on the typical π molecular orbitals of the Pc core. The αPcS1 cell showed a panchromatic response in the range 400–800 nm with a power conversion efficiency of 5.5 % when used as a light-harvesting dye on a TiO2 electrode for the dye-sensitized solar cell under one-sun conditions.
