« Le seul bon Indien est un Indien mort » (dicton dérivé de la parole attribuée au Général Philip Sheridan : « The only good Indians I ever saw were dead », 1870). C’est avec des phrases de cette portée que le mythe de l’Indien s’est construit au fil des siècles, de la conquête des terres américaines aux manifestations revendicatrices des communautés amérindiennes. Depuis les années 1960 et le combat politique mené par l’American Indian Movement, la question du « génocide » des Indiens d’Amérique du Nord ne cesse de diviser. L’histoire des Indiens d’Amérique du Nord et, en particulier, du Canada, est traversée par le fléau de l’alcoolisme qui, au même titre que les maladies véhiculées par les colons, affaiblit et dégrada tout un peuple en le réduisant à l’état de sous-groupe culturel, assisté et dépendant. L’alcool fut l’un des moyens d’acculturation par la force, ainsi que l’éducation et l’éclatement des familles. L’inactivité de la vie sur les réserves joua un rôle essentiel dans la déchéance des guerriers des Plaines. Cette notice étudiera dans un premier temps ce que nous pouvons nommer le « génocide éprouvé », qui est à l’origine du mouvement de revendication en faveur de la reconnaissance officielle d’un génocide amérindien, puis s’attardera dans un second temps sur une lecture historique des faits qui nous conduira aux confins de la définition du génocide – terme toujours délicat à manier (voir les analyses développées dans l’introduction de Le Massacre, objet d’histoire, dirigé par David El Kenz, Paris, Folio, 2005) – et permettra le rapprochement conceptuel du « genos » et de l’« ethnos ».
