Abstract
Abstract The notion of textual agency refers to the capacity displayed by texts to do things in various circumstances. It consists of recognizing that various types of texts—whether through the form of written documents, iconic signs, or even oral productions—can make a difference in a given situation. By mobilizing this notion, we can understand how and why people can sometimes be betrayed or deceived by what they say, a phenomenon that conversation analysts identified a long time ago, but that they never really explained. Textual agency should, however, not be restricted to cases of misunderstanding. If there is such a thing as mutual comprehension for all practical purposes, it is because the texts we produce can also faithfully translate what we mean to say.
