France Martineau a entrepris de constituer un « Corpus de français familier ancien », formé par la correspondance intime du xviie au xxe siècle, afin de reconstruire en partie l’histoire des variétés de français en Amérique du Nord. C’est de cette source, tout autant que de ses travaux antérieurs, qu’elle tire les données de l’étude sur le français de la région du Détroit qui fait l’objet de sa contribution inaugurale à nos Cahiers Charlevoix. Comparant la variété du français de la vallée du Saint-Laurent à celle de l’Ontario, notamment dans ses traces anciennes, elle observe leur étroite parenté, puis s’interroge sur l’impact de l’anglais sur ce groupe minoritaire : si tantôt elle constate un emprunt, elle suppose néanmoins que des archaïsmes pourraient également s’y trouver. Le maintien général de « point » au Détroit, tranchant sur son net recul devant « pas » dans le Québec du début du xixe siècle, milite en ce sens et marque un écart entre ces populations françaises dans la propagation de la forme nouvelle. On comprend mieux alors la complexité de ces réalités linguistiques et toute la prudence que leur étude nécessite.
