V éritable électron libre, Dominic Gagnon est l'un des rares réalisateurs à travailler à partir de matériaux aussi peu orthodoxes-impurs, diront certains-sans pour autant faire de concessions théoriques et artistiques.Créant un incroyable tour de force, sa pratique impose la nécessité de repenser le cinéma en d'autres termes, même parfois de revenir, étonnamment, à ce qui en fait la spécificité.Revendiquant simplement le statut de documentariste, ses œuvres, dans leur forme et leur contenu, repoussent toutes frontières, définitions et poncifs liés à un genre ou une pratique précise.Ses films atteignent leur quintessence au moment où il se tourne vers le Web : ses images insistent ainsi sur les enjeux contemporains liés à la préservationnous parlerions plutôt de sauvetage et de réhabilitation-et à la diffusion d'un certain patrimoine audio-visuel à l'ère du numérique.Dans le cadre de ce numéro d'Imaginations, une présentation de la démarche du réalisateur s'imposait ainsi d'elle-même.
