Abstract
Abstract The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) is the document to begin with for any exploration of how UN perspectives on family took shape and changed over time and of how they affected policies and debates on family in general. A historical review of UN documents shows how family and family‐related issues have been discussed and handled within the United Nations and how UN perspectives on family have evolved in conjunction with changing international politics, social and economic conditions, and cultural understandings, as well as amid the competing viewpoints of member states and organizations in the United Nations.
