Abstract
Between the years 1935 and 1938 the British government explored the possibility of returning Germany's African possessions as part of the policy of appeasement. The return of some, or all of Germany's colonies was to form a key component of a European settlement with Hitler. However the British encountered numerous obstacles, the most important of which was Hitler's overall indifference to possessions in Africa. Retroceding Germany's African colonies would also involve giving away territory then held by France, Belgium, and Portugal. However, British prime minister Neville Chamberlain pursued the project in 1938, culminating in a formal proposal to which Hitler never replied.
