Abstract
Geographers' long‐standing interests in the ecology of disease and the spatial organization of medical services were transformed in the early 1990s with the emergence of a new approach labeled “health geography.” Centered on the dyad of health and place, health geography's interests expanded beyond traditional concerns for disease and medicine to encompass a wider cultural focus on both “therapeutic” and “unhealthy” places. This expansion involved greater theoretical engagement with health contexts as sites of meaning and power, as well as engagement with themes such as risk and care. Health geography is renowned for qualitative approaches that are well suited to a cultural focus on place and health, although quantitative methods remain important. It is a remarkably diverse field, with concerns encompassing social inequalities in health, environmental issues, and health‐care provision; nonetheless, spanning this diversity is the centrality of place in the study of health.
