The concept of the “ecological footprint” represents an empirical assessment of the amount of biologically productive land and sea area that is necessary to supply the resources consumed by a human population, and to assimilate the waste associated with that consumption, and to relate these to an assessment of global resources stocks and waste sinks. Developed by Dr. William Rees and Dr. Mathis Wackernagel at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in the late 1990s, measurements of the ecological footprint are today carried out at different scales, to assess the “footprint” left by individuals, local communities, regions, nations, and the entire global society.
