Abstract
Patrick Joseph Read was active in radical and syndicalist movements in Canada, France, Ireland, spain, and the United states, serving on the executive committee of the Communist Party of Ireland and for many years as editor of the Industrial Workers of the World's (IWW) Industrial Worker. Born on a ship sailing from Dublin to London on February 25, 1899, Patrick Read lived with his family in London and then Liverpool until 1912, when they moved to Canada. When his parents returned to Britain in 1915, Read stayed behind. soon thereafter he joined the One Big Union of Canada, later enlisting in the Canadian army and serving on the Western Front. In 1919 he joined the IWW.
