Abstract
Durant l’été 1954, un événement original est organisé à Biot par le groupe Espace : l’exposition « Architecture Formes Couleur ». Conçue par des artistes et des architectes, elle tente d’incarner « la présence fondamentale de la plastique » à laquelle l’humanité, d’après eux, a droit. Fondée par André Bloc et Félix Del Marle en 1951, l’association souhaite dépasser la scission entre architectes et artistes afin d’aboutir à l’unité de l’art. Le manifeste souligne la nécessaire progression de cet idéal au travers d’expériences audacieuses. Porté par l’utopie moderniste, le groupe espère bénéficier de commandes importantes en pleine ébullition urbanistique et s’intéresse aux nouveaux matériaux de création. Certains membres revendiquent la prise en compte des émotions collectives et non la simple satisfaction des besoins fonctionnels de l’homme. Les néo-plasticiens refusent cette pratique subjective. Une seconde manifestation en plein air est organisée durant l’été 1955 au parc national de Saint-Cloud mais d’ultimes scissions sonnent le glas du groupe en France, mettant à l’épreuve cette tentative de synthèse nationale des arts. L’évaluation de la démonstration de Biot constitue un filtre intéressant d’analyse en identifiant les difficultés intrinsèques au groupe Espace. Quelle trace a laissé cette recherche d’un dialogue entre artistes et architectes sur la Côte d’Azur ? Constitue-t-elle l’ultime prolongement des théories modernistes ou leur relecture critique ?
