Abstract
The theory of structuration is primarily associated with the work of Anthony Giddens. He attempted to avoid the problems of structural determinism and theories of action by integrating them through the notion of the duality of structure, in which structure is both medium and outcome of the social practices of agents. Action is in turn enabled as well as constrained by structures, which consist of rules and resources that are reproduced only through social practices. Anthropology has tended to deal with the structure–agency problem using different conceptual frameworks responding to cultural diversity in the nature of persons. Time and history are central to the adequacy of structurationist explanations.
