Abstract
Though Edwin Arnold (1832–1904) published many collections of poetry that were popular in his day, he is remember now largely for a single poem. That poem, The Light of Asia (1879), is a book‐length narrative epic. The book made Arnold an international best‐selling author at a scale seen by very few other poets, earning him a knighthood and very nearly the Poet Laureateship. He also had a long career as a popular and influential writer and editor for the London Daily Telegraph . He and The Light of Asia are most significant as a primary catalyst for an international cultural paradigm shift that promoted East–West dialogue about Buddhism from the final quarter of the nineteenth century forward
