Editorial introductions

Current Opinion in Psychiatry was launched in 1988. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The field of psychiatry is divided into 13 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Journal's Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Colin HemmingsColin HemmingsColin Hemmings is a Consultant Psychiatrist and the Service Line Leader of the Mental Health of Learning Disabilities Service Line, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, UK. He qualified in Medicine from St. Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, London, UK and he also has degrees from University of Bristol, UK, SOAS, UK and University College London, UK. His academic interests are people with intellectual disabilities include psychosis, the relationship between mental illness and challenging behaviors and mental health services and also medical anthropology. He is currently undertaking further research on mental health services for people with intellectual disabilities for his MD degree at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK. Henry KwokHenry KwokHenry Kwok, founding Head of the Psychiatric Unit for Learning Disabilities (PULD) in Kwai Chung Hospital, Hong Kong - China was the mastermind for the development of the specialty of Intellectual Disability (ID) Psychiatry in Hong Kong-China. He received his basic medical and psychiatric training in Hong Kong. Then he undertook specialist training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, ID Psychiatry, Developmental Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry at various institutes and hospitals in UK, the Netherlands and USA. His work as a service head, clinician, researcher and academic in the field of ID Psychiatry extends back to almost 20 years. He was elected Secretary of the Section of Mental Retardation, World Psychiatric Association (WPA) in 2004 and he had served the Section for eight years. He was appointed by World Health Organization (WHO) to the Working Group on ID for the revision of ICD-10 to ICD-11. Dr Kwok has a keen interest in both teaching and research. He has been a trainer and examiner of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists for many years. He has also taught or run training programs for several Asian countries. He has been the Principal Investigator of many studies and drug trials. His publications include original articles, reviews and book chapters. He has been the Reviewer of many local and international journals. He had also served the Research Ethics Committee of the Hospital Authority in Hong Kong. Julio Arboleda-FlórezJulio Arboleda-FlórezProfessor Julio Arboleda-Flórez, Canadian, born in Colombia, is a graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Bogotá, Colombia (1964). He did his studies in Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, Canada (1970) and in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Canada (1971). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC, 1970), Diploma of the American Board of Forensic Psychiatry (DABFP, 1979) and PhD in Epidemiology (University of Calgary, Canada, 1994). Professor Arboleda-Flórez holds a Diplôme de Langue Française from the École Internationale de Langue et Civilization Françaises (Paris, 1984). He is a Member of the American College of Psychiatrists; Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association; Fellow of the American College of Forensic Psychiatry and of the American Board of Forensic Examiners; Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and of the Royal Society of Medicine, Honorary Member of the World Psychiatric Association (1993), Honorary Member of the Asociación Ecuatoriana de Psiquiatría (1994), Member Emeritus of the Forensic Department, Associaõ Brasileira de Psiquiatria (1996) and Honorary Life Chairman of the Forensic Section of the World Psychiatric Association (2008). He is a holder of a Rectoral Medal and is Honorary Professor at the Universidad de Chile, Chile; Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa and Visiting Professor, Universidad del Bosque, Bogotá, Colombia. Presently, Professor Arboleda-Flórez is Director of the Queen's/PAHO/WHO Regional Unit for Research and Training in Psychiatric Epidemiology; Member of the Nominating Committee and of the Ethics Committee of the World Psychiatric Association; Consultant, WPA Task Force on the Destigmatization of Psychiatry; Member, Panel of Experts – Strategy and Action Plan Mental Health for the Americas of the Pan American Health Organization; Member, Research Ethics Review Board of the Pan American Health Organization; Corresponding Member, Ethics Committee of the American Psychiatric Association, and President of the World Association for Social Psychiatry. He is Temprary Consultant with the World Health Organization, Immediaste Past-President, International Academy of Law and Mental Health and of the Canadian Academy of Psychiatric Epidemiology, and has been chairman of the Province of Ontario, Forensic Psychiatric Services Expert Advisory Panel and member, Ontario Review Board. He is Editor-in-Chief of The Open Law Journal, Member of Editorial Boards of national and international medical journals, Guest Editor on special topics at the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and Current Opinion in Psychiatry and he acts as Reviewer for research granting bodies. Professor Arboleda-Flórez is an international speaker, researcher on mental health services, psychiatric ethics and psychiatric epidemiology, author of books, multiple chapters and over 200 scientific papers and technical reports on mental health services, public mental health, mental health ethics, forensic psychiatry and psychiatric epidemiology. He is fluent in Spanish, English and French and has reading and oral comprehension in Italian, Portuguese and German. Stefan LeuchtStefan LeuchtDr Leucht has been practicing at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the Technische Universität München, Munich, Germany since 1994. From 2002, he spent a year as a research associate at the Zucker Hillside Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, USA. He has been Vice-Chairman of the department since 2009, and was appointed Associate Professor in 2011. He is also an Editor to the Cochrane schizophrenia group. Dr Leucht's research focus is psychopharmacology and evidence-based medicine. He has published a number of meta-analyses on treatments for schizophrenia and also has a research interest in pharmacogenetics, compliance enhancement strategies and medical decision making. Kostas FountoulakisKostas FountoulakisDr Fountoulakis received his medical degree (1989), performed his residency in psychiatry (1998), and earned his PhD in psychiatry (1999) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He received a three year fellowship in psychosomatic medicine and a one year postdoctoral fellowship for research from the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece. Until 2003 he served as a medical officer in the Greek Armed forces and retired with the rank of major. In 2005, Dr Fountoulakis was a Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Neuropsychiatry, at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Dr Fountoulakis’ areas of clinical and research interest are reflected in the topics that he teaches: general psychiatry, biological psychiatry, psychopharmacology, mood disorders, schizophrenia and personality disorders. He is an active member of a number of national and international professional organizations, including the EPA, APA, WPA, CINP, ECNP, ISAD, ISBD, EBF, the Cochrane Collaboration and others. He was most recently a member of the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP) advisory board to the task force on the usefulness of antidepressants and the mental health economics task force of the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA). He chairs the ISNP and since 2006, has served as Secretary, and Co-Chair and currently as Chair of the Private Practice Section, of the World Psychiatric Association. He is Chair, Neuropsychological and Psychometric Instruments Section, of the Greek Psychiatric Association. He also served as chair of the Membership and Credentials Committee of the CINP for the period 2010–2. Dr Fountoulakis is Editor in Chief of Annals of General Psychiatry and is Section Editor of Current Opinion in Psychiatry. He has coauthored more than 250 papers delivered to congresses and more than 130 of them are published in international journals such as the LANCET, Biological Psychiatry, International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, Journal of Affective Disorders, Schizophrenia Research, Psychiatry Research, Bipolar Disorders, Annals of General Hospital Psychiatry, and the British Journal of Psychiatry, among others, with over 1500 citations and h = 23. He authored or co-authored a number of chapters in books including the Mood disorders chapter for the Wiki project of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA). He has received a number of national and international research awards. In 2009 was appointed member of the Greek Ministry of Health Committee for the Administrative, Economic and Scientific Supervision of the Mental Health Units of the deinstitutionalization project.
