This Canadian study assesses the adoption by neonatal nurses of behaviours that prevent visual, auditory and tactile over-stimulation in preterm infants. It begins with a comprehensive review of current literature, followed by data from a multiple choice questionnaire on nursing behaviours that prevent over stimulation of preterm infants, based in part on the theory of reasoned action (in which the adoption of a behaviour by a person is the immediate result of behavioural intention and is influenced by attitudes and subjective norms). Behaviours include the covering of incubators (to prevent visual over stimulation), limitation of conversation near the incubator (to prevent auditory over stimulation) and clustering care during preterm infant waking periods (to prevent tactile over stimulation).
