Abstract
This chapter examines the question of where Europe is: whether Europe extends where languages and cultures flowed with capital and colonization; whether Europe is in America and Canada, Australia and Israel; whether Europe is a place or an idea; or what Europe is when it is at home. It suggests that Europe has never been quite synonymous with Christendom; it has also been the home of the greatest threat to Christianity: atheism. Modern Europe orients much of its politics around shame. Europe remembers the Jews who shaped it, were persecuted and killed in it, exiled from it. The practice of democratic assemblies and a transparent law appeared not in a Christian, but in a pagan, European past. Europe has been shaped by Islam, and more specifically by Muslim empires. Muslims shape Europe now.
