Alors que l’ethnographie s’est longtemps définie par le fait d’habiter loin de chez soi, il a fallu attendre les travaux de Claude Lévi-Strauss, Janet Carsten et Stephen Hugh-Jones pour que la maison devienne un thème de recherche à part entière. Autrefois tenue pour l’expression superficielle de dynamiques historiques et structures profondes, la maison apparait désormais comme une instance productrice de la société.
