Abstract
The religious beliefs of Victorian Britain were extensive and varied. Although Christianity was not the only religious tradition in the period, it was the most influential, and its presence can be found in a wide variety of literature. This includes the writing of authors who identified themselves as religious and works that explicitly engaged with theological ideas. But the presence of Christianity is also visible in literature that is less explicitly marked as religious, and also in literature that is critical of aspects of the theological tradition.
