Abstract
The analysis of the characteristics of total institutions is the subject of a lengthy essay by Erving Goffman, a Canadian‐born sociologist best known for his complex and subtle contributions to the analysis of social interaction. He defined the term as “a place of residence and work where a large number of like‐situated individuals cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time together lead an enclosed formally administered round of life.” Shorter versions of his argument were first published in 1957. It was, however, through the longer paper's appearance as the lead essay in his second book, Asylums , that the concept became best known.
