Hall-Findlay has succeeded in sharing her 27 years of experience in aesthetic breast surgery through her beautifully illustrated book, Aesthetics of Breast Surgery: Concepts & Techniques. This single-author, 12-chapter book of 706 pages spans the topics of breast augmentation, vertical breast reduction, liposuction-only breast reduction, breast re-reduction, mastopexy, mastopexy-augmentation, nipple necrosis, and breast asymmetry. The book is divided into two parts: the first reviews clinical concepts and principles of aesthetic breast surgery, and the second addresses the author's techniques for the above-mentioned operations.FigureMerit has to be given to the meticulous organization of this book, from the excellent font size to the bolded captions of important concepts to, most importantly, the chapter layout. Each chapter concludes with a section entitled “Reflections and Concepts to Recall,” adding to the personal feel of the text and facilitating the synthesis of information for the reader. The quality of the pictures and diagrams in this book is outstanding. As a bonus, the red hard cover and the binding are of a quality that we rarely see today. Every chapter is preceded by a beautiful illustration of Canadian artwork that makes this book all the more enjoyable to read. The author also includes two CDs of good-quality images that nicely complement the text, with intraoperative filming and step-by-step approaches to subglandular and subpectoral breast augmentation, vertical breast reduction, re-reduction, mastopexy, and mastopexy-augmentation. Dr. Hall-Findlay states that the book is intended to be “a comprehensive (but personal) approach to aesthetic breast surgery.” Indeed, this book is not encyclopedic but rather a detailed description of Dr. Hall-Findlay's personal experience. Her writing is very honest and almost conversational, making readers feel that they are practically in Dr. Hall-Findlay's office analyzing the patients with her. Her detailed description of patient care, with an entire chapter dedicated to patient selection and education (chapter 4), provides readers with excellent tips and pitfalls to avoid that only many years of experience can provide. The topics that are presented are very complete; however, this textbook could not be used as the only aesthetic breast surgery reference for plastic surgery residents, as there are some key topics, such as fat grafting and breast reduction using other pedicles, that are insufficiently described. The description of breast footprint and anatomy is excellent, as these topics are rarely as well described in other texts. Although her methodology sometimes differs from the usual doctrine (e.g., nipple position based on the superior breast footprint rather than the inferior mammary fold), she clearly explains and justifies her choices with patient data. The number of long-term follow-ups presented is impressive. In fact, as the author states in chapter 6, she lives up to the late Dr. Goldwyn's challenge by presenting a notable series of 25 consecutive cases of vertical breast reductions and their long-term follow-up data. In addition, the Results section at the end of every chapter presents four to 10 cases. Dr. Hall-Findlay's analysis of these cases is particularly interesting, self-critical, and educational.
