Abstract
The Journal has been well served by its Editorial Board, which has been in place since the Journal's inception. The Board has nurtured Respirology through its formative years and ensured its current stature. However, as the Journal has matured and grown there has also been a need to review how best to support the Journal's development over the next decade. A single Board has been formed that is a mixture of those who have a long-standing involvement with the Journal and/or the APSR, and those who have regional and international expertise in a wide range of specialties within respiratory medicine and science. I am pleased to welcome all members of our new Board and anticipate they will make a significant impact on the Journal's reputation and future. Ballots are currently underway for representatives from countries with a significant number of paid-up members of the APSR, and the successful candidates will join the Board by mid-year. The cover of Respirology, with its black masthead and graduated red colour has been used for the entire 8 years of the Journal's existence. The time has now come for a change, and a more modern look. One impetus for the change has been the significant growth in the number of articles being published in each issue and the need to relocate the Table of Contents inside the Journal. It gives me great pleasure to introduce a new Invited Review series of articles, which will run for the next year. The Pleural Disease series of review articles will comprise two reviews in each issue of the Journal; one on basic science and one on clinical aspects. I am indebted to and delighted that Dr Gary Lee and Dr Steve Mutsaers took up my invitation to co-edit this series. Working closely with the Editorial Office they have crafted a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of this area. This has set a new benchmark for our review series and a model for our future endeavours to provide you with stimulating and useful reviews. The first of the clinical reviews is “The management of pleural space infections” by Simon Chapman and Robert Davies at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics and Oxford University. The basic science review is “Pathogenesis of pleural infection” authored by Chadi Hage at Indiana University, and Kalam Mohammed and Veena Antony at the University of Florida. Professor Wan-Cheng Tan in Singapore has announced her retirement as Associate Editor. Professor Tan joined Respirology as an Associate Editor in 1997, when Volume 2, Number 1 was published. Her contribution over the past 7 years has been significant, and she has seen the journal grow substantially over that time. We are very grateful for her dedication and commitment to the Journal and the APSR. Professor Tan is moving to Canada but we hope she will maintain contact with Respirology in a different capacity. We wish her well. During the SARS crisis several doctors in Japan assisted as Locum Associate Editors while our Associate Editors in Hong Kong and Singapore were pre-occupied with treating SARS patients. We were very grateful for the support these doctors gave. One, Professor Toshihiro Nukiwa in Sendai, has kindly agreed to continue as Associate Editor on a more permanent basis. Professor Nukiwa is currently Professor at the Respiratory Medicine and Translational Research Clinic at Tohoku University Hospital. His special interests are in cancer and gene therapy. Professor Nukiwa brings to the Journal considerable experience as a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology (Lung) and the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology. We are very much looking forward to the contribution that Professor Nukiwa can make to the quality of Respirology in the future. Last issue we saw the very successful production of a Supplement on SARS generated by respiratory societies in Hong Kong and Southern China. With this volume we are pleased to see a Supplement on guidelines to managing pneumonia in a hospital setting, produced by the Japanese Respiratory Society. I commend it to you as a comprehensive review of this topic.
